“TODAY EVERYTHING AND everyone competes for our attention. We live in a world that constantly drowns all of our senses. It is not enough to do something well; it is necessary to stand out, to be different, to be creative.”
Maria Brito
I’m not going to lie — the past month of August was a bit bumpy for me in terms of my roadmap to success. The good news is it spurred me to face the reality of my current scenario in a creative way.
According to Maria Brito, an award-winning New York-based contemporary art advisor, entrepreneur, curator, and author of the book “How Creativity Rules The World,” when we find ourselves “with limited resources when we confront harsh conditions or need to figure out how to react to difficulty, creativity thrives.”
In embracing Maria’s views, I’m often reminded of a very challenging time I faced in 2019 when I endured a sleepless period of 144 hours straight.
After brainstorming with a friend over the phone for hours while nearly dozing off at the Starbucks in the Cosmopolitan luxury resort and casino in Las Vegas, I finally unearthed a creative solution to get some sleep. That was…
….use my remaining money to purchase a movie ticket at the theater across the way so that I could take a long nap. How’s that for a creative idea?
A Harvard graduate, originally from Venezuela, Maria in her book leans heavily on illuminating the creative approaches used by billion-dollar entrepreneurs and successful seven-figure artists accessible and actionable for you. Replete with compelling narratives and studies offering a panoptic view of history, culture, psychology, science, and entrepreneurship, she highlights elements utilized by some of the world’s most creative minds over the last 600 years.
In capturing some lightbulb moments from this book, I’ve been reflecting on my current predicament of how to remain relevant amid the cascade of competing digital newsletters that my “Great Books, Great Minds” members receive on a daily basis.
I just read recently that there are over 1 million other writers on Substack, the platform that I use, who are competing for subscribers. And there is just a small handful worldwide that are able to make a full-time living as regular writers on the platform.
As you might imagine, I am constantly ruminating about the value of what I’m delivering to you, the reader. And what is my audience? And whether I’ll truly be able to make a good living from this over time.
Says Maria:
“The good news is that you possess a never-ending and always-renewable source you can use to make money, reinvent yourself, pivot your business, or create products or services that your clients will love and will keep them coming back. It’s called creativity.”
Hearing this should give us all encouragement in terms of the endeavors we are pursuing.
Now, in the spirit of creativity, I would love for you to share what sorts of fun, creative solutions you are employing in your day-to-day quest for success. Please offer your thoughts in the comment section below.
In the meantime, stay thirsty for a great book — DMS
