I had the opportunity to hear Liz Gilbert Speak in Asheville a few years ago, during her book tour for Big Magic. She explained that she is often asked about how to find and pursue your passion and that people were surprised to hear that she didn't find most advice regarding following one's passion to be all that helpful. Rather than obsessing about finding your life's passion and the ideal vehicle for it, she recommends following your *curiosity* and committing yourself to the consistent daily work of rolling up your sleeves and honing your craft.
Mr. Newport's advice sounds very much in keeping with her philosophy.
