When I was a kid I wanted an encyclopedia. My college-educated Dad said he would buy one only when he was unable to answer a question of mine. One day I asked him a question and his reply was “it’s time for an Encyclopedia”. He bought the World Book encyclopedia which I treasured.
I can still recall the smell of those encyclopedias. Such great memories you evoked. My parents didn't have the opportunity to attend college and instilled the value of education and learning to my three brothers and me. It was a financial stretch for them to purchase the collection. And even at a young age I understood the importance of them. They were a portal.
Hey Michael. I found your newsletter because you were on camera in the Q&A of @SarahFay’s SubStack Notes Workshop. Trying to decide if i wanted to subscribe to your SubStack, I came across the post I’m commenting on and thought you might be interested in two different newsletters.
First, The Rational Walk is planning on reading all of The Great Books collection–the one created by Mortimer J Adler. Here is a post on his plans: https://www.greatbooksjournal.com/p/reading-plans

I still have mine. Remember when books were heavy
WOW! You do? That is so cool.
I grew up with Encyclopedia Britannica filling my Dad's book shelves.

Last year, I had the goal of trying to read through my set of the 2020 WorldBook Encyclopedias. I didn’t get far in the project. So I’m trying again this year, but am off to a late start.
